Ozro Barnes Gould was born in Canada on April 17, 1840, and was raised by his uncle, Isaac N. Howe of Sandusky County, Ohio, after the deaths of his parents. In 1861, Gould enlisted as a sergeant with Company G of the 55th Ohio Infantry Regiment; he mustered out as a captain in 1865. After the war, Gould moved to Winona, Minnesota, where he was a director for various companies. He married Mary E. Couse in Chicago in 1865 and had 3 children: Ozro C., Mary, and Ralph Fulton.
